FILM. SEND. RECEIVE. UPLOAD.

The Science StoryLab is here to help you share your science story. It might be an introduction to your science to go alongside your PhD or research. Or a summary of your field expedition. We can cut a simple video with narration and music or animate data and words over the top.

Use our tutorials and templates to film your story, or work with us to put something together. Send it to us to be edited, then use it on your social media, website or research page.

1 Minute.

1 minute isn’t long to say what you have to say. It’s a really good length of video to keep peoples attention though. It’s also a shareable length of video for all social media, and amongst friends on colleagues. Instead of covering your whole field, just concentrate on specific points. Do a few of these and you’ll have a collection of videos that shows off your work.

2 Minutes.

In 2 minutes you can cover a specific point, but also put it in to context. You can tell your audience exactly what they need to know but add a call to action. These can also be used as introductions to field on your research page or a Powerpoint presentation.

3 Minutes.

This is where we start putting larger ideas together. A 3 minute video can convey a lot, and it’s not trivial to put one together. You have to keep your audience but you can tell them so much. A few of these would make a great YouTube series about your field, or specific parts of it. They can be included in talks and also used for events.

5 Minutes.

Now we’re looking at a small documentary style video. It can cover the context of your field but dive in to specifics too. These need a bit more prep to make sure the audience stays engaged throughout, and have a core message at it’s heart. They can be multi location and provide great insight to cover your PhD, Research or other ideas!

2 Minute Example

In Hong Kong our team came across a Car Park that was infamous for human wildlife conflict. On site we came up with an idea, some background context and a key message. Sophie delivered small chunks wonderfully, while Huw filmed and caught some nice general footage of the monkeys. It comes together into a simple effective 2 minute video.

6 Minute Example

The team headed up to Scotland to see what the landscape of Glen Coe had to teach us about the geography of the UK. Filmed with an interview narrative with general footage and shots to show context, a simple film with a science story.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story can make all the difference.
