THANK YOU

Thank you for attending our Science StoryTelling Training, Durham University Edition! Here you’ll find catch ups, slide decks and some extra information from the training, all updated as we make our way through.

Storytelling.

Through our training we looked at how to build a narrative to educate, entertain and enlighten. This doesn’t need to be a theatrical tale but it does need to make sense to our audience and guide them through our talk or video.

Public Speaking.

There’s lot’s to learn in public speaking. The things we learn can be used in speaking to the public on stage or on screen. Whether it’s in a theatre or down the lens of your camera phone, the rules still apply!

Photography.

Telling stories through photography is as old as us actually having cameras. The fundamentals are straight forward once you know them but sometimes the technology can be a barrier. We try to break down these barriers in this section.

Filmmaking.

Cameras and computers are amazing creative tools we can use to tell our story. In these sections we learned a little bit about the cameras and the edit themselves so they don’t hold us back when we have something to say.

Tell your Story.

In Online Session 1 of our training program, we delve into the intersection of public speaking and science communication, recognizing the crucial role that effective communication plays in bridging the gap between scientists and the public. Through honing public speaking skills, scientists can captivate audiences, convey complex concepts in an engaging manner, and ultimately inspire interest and understanding in scientific topics.

Photograph your Science.

Photography plays a crucial role in science communication, enabling researchers to visually capture and convey complex scientific concepts in an accessible manner. By utilising photographs, scientists can effectively communicate their findings to a broader audience, making science more engaging and understandable to the general public.

Do it on Screen.

When utilizing film making as a tool for science communication, understanding the technical aspects of capturing visuals is crucial. Whether using a sophisticated camera or a simple phone, honing skills to effectively convey scientific concepts is invaluable. In Online Session 3 of the training, we delve into the intricacies of framing, lighting, sound, and editing techniques.

Edit in Wondershare Filmora.

With your training you’ll receive a life time licence of Wondershare Filmora. This editing software will do most of the tasks you need it to when making videos about your science. This link will always be here for you to come back to.

One on One Sessions.

Once you have your draft video and want more personalised feedback, book in a one on one session with Huw through Zoom.

Kit Lists.

You can tell great stories through film by using simple gear. But in Filmmaking, the more tools you have at your disposal, the more versatile you can be in telling those stories.
